When Mirabai Chanu won silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event on Saturday, she made history by becoming India’s first medalist in the Tokyo Olympics. Chanu therefore becomes the second Indian female weightlifter to win an Olympic medal, following Karnam Malleswari.
The 26-year-old won silver for India on Saturday, lifting 202kg (87kg+115kg) in the 49kg division, surpassing Karnam Malleswari’s bronze from the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Mirabai had not logged a single valid lift in the Rio 2016 Olympics, so the medal is a huge accomplishment for her.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter who was born on August 8, 1994. She was a silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
